V for Vendetta

Wowza, what a movie- about an oppressive government regime and a villainous hero’s revolt. Raises some massive questions and leads to awesome discussion about….. revolution, ideas, totalitarianism, identity, power, religion, morality, people and on and on. Really recommend it, although some bits may affront some people!
Loadsa brilliant clips to use- and quotes.

My favourite was: “A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having”. It kind of goes with a current theme in my head about people needing to not take themselves too seriously. Not being frivolous, but recognising the Humour of God in things, and not trying to cover up our own bumbling nature or whatever.

But I also liked this one as an analogy- [about Guy Fawkes and his attempt to blow up Parliament] "We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can still change the world. I've witnessed first hand the power of ideas, I've seen people kill in the name of them, and die defending them... but you cannot kiss an idea, cannot touch it, or hold it... ideas do not bleed, they do not feel pain, they do not love... And it is not an idea that I miss, it is a man... A man that made me remember the fifth of November… a man that I will never forget."

i tried watching this on the plane and didn't enjoy it at all. I kinda felt the movie itself was tryinng to hard to be serious even though there's a guy running around with a clown's mask.. but to be fair i was a bit tired, crampt and my headphones kept cutting in and out, so i couldn't really take in the deep dialogue...

I also had a mixed review on this one. Great idea, but the fact that he never took his mask off really bugged me. Still, it once again brings up the subject of revolution/reform and the fact that somebody needs to be willing to lay it all on the line to make it happen.

Justin, you need to give it another crack!
I loved the whole no mask removal thing. Grated against the movie norm which is always good.
It is a bit of a weird movie. But I thought it was real artistic and thought provoking.

Lots of anti-Christian symbolism in it. It left me feeling inspired and in awe, but after thinking about it, it really does have a lot of destructive underlying philosophies, so we should be careful not to get carried away with it

I was there when lucy was watching it and also played a big part in the discussion afterwards. I liked it, although there was a lot of dodgy stuff. The question that plagued me after it all was how come under such a terrible totalitarian tyranical regime the 'established church' seemed to be thriving in a bad way? An interesting inclusion by the script writers... sorry not trying to be hugely profound, it just got me thinking a bit.

Hey Lucy,
I have to say that I support you on this one and I really enjoyed the movie which really surprised me!

I also thought that there was a lot there for us to identify with today and issues that we are facing in society that we can't ignore!

I think we are too quick to defend Christendom when movies like this attack it. And I don't think we should. Christ, Yes- always- But not the regular atrocities performed in His name.

Christine- yeah, heaps of issues, eh? Even the homosexuality thing for one- yes, it pushed my "Oh, thats quite unnecesary" button but really raised critical ideas about our treatment of those who are different.
